Starting with the structures, there are four standard sizes used by playwood. The main tower/s could be 6′x6′, or 6′x4′. connecting towers could be 4′x4′, 2′x2′, or the same sizes as the main tower/s. When it comes to picking a playset or playscape for your yard and your child, the choice between the materials that they are made from should be high on your list of questions. Playwood uses 100% FOHC heartwood redwood.

Redwood Playset Tower From Playwood

Lets look at some of the most common materials used. First, there is metals, usually steel tubing (pipes). Years ago, most playground equipment was made from steel. Even today, most swing sets are still made from steel tubes attached together with exposed bolts. These tubes are bolted together with exposed bolts. They may come with covers to hide or pad the sharp heads, nuts, and threaded ends, but over time and exposure to the sun an weather, those covers deteriorate and fall off. Metal tubes, exposed to weather  will rust. If the tubes have a quality coating on the outside, they rust from the inside out, causing unseen safety hazards from a weakened structure. The same can be said about metal fatigue. Repetitive flexing causes metal to weaken, and eventually fail. The swing itself usually consists of a two open chains attached to a seat. Chains have safety issues also, once again they are covered with plastic sleeves that have the same problems as at bolt covers.

While wood swing sets, playsets and playscapes are still put together with nuts and bolts, the nut and bolt head are recessed into the wood components, keeping sharp edges away from playing children. Swings from Playwood come with safety ropes, and wood doesn’t rust or fatigue, solving all of the problems with steel playground equipment.

Wood playsets and playscapes answer all these potential problems. But there are still choices concerning what type of wood to use. Pine, pressure treated pine (PTP), and redwood are the main woods available for use. Pine is inherently weaker, and doesn’t weather well (rots, warps, decays, splits). PTP seems to solve some of those problems, but PTP is treated with harsh chemicals (arsenic). Redwood is the superior choice for outdoor use child safe playsets and playscapes.
